Announcing my new album Silver Horizon

Hello friends,

I’m delighted to be able to tell you that my new album Silver Horizon will be released on 16th August and is available to pre-order and pre-save now.

Pre-order CD and Limited Edition Vinyl (download included) here

As you’ll have noticed, I like to create a different sound world for each album, and this time, you can expect some lush dream-like textures, layered harmonies, and melodic earworms! Silver Horizon features some of the best musicians I’ve had the pleasure of working with, including Stuart McCallum on electric guitar, Ben Nicholls on bass, Evan Jenkins on drums, Rowan Rheingans on backing vocals and Ian Stephenson (who produced Home Waters) on harmonium.

The theme this time is turning points, and the title track – which you can hear now on Bandcamp – is a kind of prayer from the perspective of a person at a turning point. They’re asking the future—symbolised by the horizon—for the peace and reassurance they know it can’t give by its very nature, but they’re asking all the same. It’s that hope for the future, and hope in the face of adverisity, that is at the heart of the album. This might be my most hopeful album to date, and I can’t wait for you to make these songs your own.

The sleeve art is by Nicolas Feldmeyer, a Swiss artist whose images perfectly captured the album theme for me.

I’m also announcing my autumn album launch tour today, with shows featuring some of the very special musicians who played on the album. Tickets are on sale now.

All the best,

Sam

New single released 12.4.24

I’m delighted to announce that my new single ‘Sights Beyond The Sky’ will be released next Friday 12th April! Pre-save now: https://CaptainRecs.lnk.to/SBTS

One of the things I love most about the significant people in my life is that connecting with them allows me to see into new realms, expanding my universe. This song is a space-themed ode to that experience.

The telescope seemed a perfect symbol. Here, it is expertly rendered by Joe, aged 8, ably assisted by my designer friends Jon and Ross (Joe’s dad) of JMG Studio.

The single was recorded by Andy Bell at Red Kite studio in Wales and features Stuart McCallum (The Breath) on electric guitar, Ben Nicholls (Seth Lakeman) on bass, and Evan Jenkins on drums.

I hope you enjoy it!

FolkEast 2024

Big news: I’ll be performing at FolkEast festival this year! This weekend is truly one of the highlights of the folk festival season and I’m thrilled to be back. Folk East takes place in Suffolk 16-18th August.
Not only will I be playing a solo set, but I’ll be accompanying my very talented friend Sean Cooney of The Young’uns as we present an exclusive premiere of Peterloo, a new suite of songs written by Sean themed around the 1819 Peterloo Massacre, fittingly on the 205th anniversary of the event.

Solo Spring Tour: Tickets Now On Sale

Hello there,

I hope you’re keeping well.

All the best,

Sam

Just Announced: London 18.10.23

I’m excited to announce that on Weds 18th Oct I’ll be performing at Grand Junction in Paddington, London alongside some brilliant Canadians; my friend and collaborator Catherine MacLellan and trad trio Inn Echo.

It’s about ten years since I first went to PEI to write songs and tour around the Maritimes with Catherine, and I’m grateful for the chance to play with great PEI musicians again.

Come and join us!

New Live Album

Last spring, I played a solo set at one of my favourite London venues, The Green Note, as part of the many-times rescheduled tour for my album Home Waters. It was wonderful to be back; the atmosphere was as good as always. I’ve had great gigs and made good friends there, even sharing a bill with Davey Graham once.

We recorded the show that night, and it’s now available to Hudson Club subscribers over at Hudson Records. This monthly subscription gives you access to exclusives from Hudson and friends-of-Hudson artists. Head to the website to hear the album and loads of other great stuff.
Thanks to my friends at Hudson Records for inviting me to contribute.

The No Testament’s 10th Anniversary & a special offer

I released my second album, The No Testament, ten years ago this month.

Around the time that I was writing the album, I became increasingly interested in American spirituals, gospel, and in particular, the shapenote hymn singing tradition. I’d go to Sacred Harp singings as often as possible. The intensity of the sound just knocked me out. I began exploring the idea of combining the style and feel of these hymns with lyrics that were relevant to me and the people I know on an everyday level; in a sense, I wrote my own hymns. This idea of the secular hymn gave rise to some of the songs on the album, including Dreams Are Made Of Money.

I’ve long been fascinated by how common themes recur in everything from myths to songs, films, fables and parables. Carl Jung saw the Collective Unconscious as the source of all this, a deep-seated set of instincts and beliefs held by all people, inherited from the past collective experience of humanity. My paraphrase: people are all made of the same stuff, so they tell similar stories.
Writing songs and making albums is a way to be a part of this sprawling, endless conversation about what it feels like to be alive. It feels like a great privilege. Even on the difficult days, I know that I have something to contribute to the conversation, however small, however many people have said similar things.
If you were to ask me how an old song about chimney sweep fits into all that, I’d have to admit I’ve no clue. But many of you seemed to enjoy listening to it as much as Sam Sweeney and I enjoyed playing it on the telly.

To celebrate the album’s anniversary, for the whole month of August, I’ll sign all Bandcamp CD orders of The No Testament and include a free copy of Live At The Union Chapel EP (featuring songs from The No Testament).
