About Sam
Midlands-born Sam Carter is a BBC Folk Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist renowned for his vivid, keenly observed songwriting, which Uncut described as being "as penetrating as Richard Thompson's best work". For over 15 years, he has been stirring audiences from Camden to Canada, from major festivals to intimate clubs, earning a reputation as one of contemporary folk's most distinctive voices.
A highly regarded instrumentalist, Sam has been described as "the finest English-style fingerpicking guitarist of his generation" by Bellowhead's Jon Boden, and praised for his "killer voice" by Ivor Novello-winning musician Nitin Sawhney.
Sam has written and released six albums under his own name and two with the BBC Folk Award-nominated folk-rock band False Lights, with his music drawing on a diverse range of influences, from English folksong and American shape-note singing through to hard rock. His albums have earned national radio play and live sessions on BBC Radio 2, 3, 4, and 6 Music, and have been reviewed across publications including The Guardian, Mojo, Uncut, and fRoots. A spellbinding appearance on Later… with Jools Holland, playing songs from his shape-note-influenced album The No Testament alongside fiddler Sam Sweeney, remains one of the standout moments of his career.
As an international touring artist, Sam has performed across Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Closer to home, he has played at some of the UK's most prestigious venues and festivals, including Cambridge Folk Festival, Glastonbury, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, and The Barbican.
